The AMAzing Stu Duval
Wow - what an amazing author and entertainer! The year 7 classes were lucky enough to have author/illustrator/storyteller Stu Duval deliver a captivating story telling performance. Stu delivered an inspiring performance and gave Room 5's writers a lot to think about for their narrative writing this term.

It has been great to get back into the swing of this for this busy 9 week term. Lots to look forward to including two author visits, a Royal New Zealand Ballet workshop, Athletics Day, Beach Ed, a fun swim at Moana Pool, Te Reo and Mandarin lessons and more! Keep an eye out on the 'Key Dates' page to see when things are happening.
Keep NZ Beautiful Week Clean up
SPEECH FINALs
Well done to Ben and Josh for being two of only five year 7s selected for the Balmac Speech Finals. Ben was crowned Year 7 winner (and Josh's speech was up there with the best of them)!
REMINDER - Get your Pharmacology Department trip notices in by Friday
Jack brings his kart to school
On Friday Jack brought his kart to school to show off some of his skills alongside the other members (Josh and Alex) of the Balmacewen Karting team which won the National School Karting Champs. The teams efforts we acknowledged during assembly and Josh educated the audience on some of the finer details of the sport. Great job Jack, Room 5 are proud of your efforts!
The Freshman Shield
(It was good while it lasted)!
At least we held it longer than Otago held the Ranfurly Shiled! Congratulations to Room 9 for winning an extremely close dodgeball challenge. We will lick our wounds and try to regain the shield after a few classes have had some challenges.
Freshman Shield CHAMPIONS!
Room 5 is currently the holders of the Freshman Shield (akin to the Ranfurly Shield of Y7). This is a huge honour and we will fight tooth and nail to hold on to it! Tino pai rawa!
CLASS PHOTO
Class photo order forms have been handed out. Make sure to get them in to the office by Monday 15th June.
Want to win stuff? How about entering a cool photo of some kind of light into this Otago Uni competition. Who knows what you might get out of it!
What a wet week we had! The perfect time to be looking at The Water Cycle. Below Aimee interviews a glass of water (a.k.a. Caitlin)!.
Below is Room13 (2014) performing their dance version of The Water Cycle Song in school assembly :-)

EVEN NewER Date For the Pineapple track!!!
We are now planning to walk the Pineapple track on Friday morning (25th Feb), leaving school by buss at 9am and returning to school around 11:45pm. Click here to view the permission letter. Please note that all students need to have a rain jacket, sun hat, water and warm clothes at their disposal so they are prepared for any weather system.
Error on camp notice! Please excuse the error on the camp notice that went out this week. The dates of Wednesday 4th March - Friday 6th March are correct but the part where you are to circle any days you could help are mislabled as Monday day to Wednesday day (instead of Wednesday day - Friday day). Click here to view the updated notice.
School Powhiri
Well done to everyone for the great Powhiri singing. I hope you all now feel fully welcomed as part of our school community. Enjoy the photos and video below.
Sadly poor weather and a lack of appropriate wet weather clothing meant we weren't able to walk the Pineapple track. We will reschedule a walk for another time which is yet to be confirmed. We will used this as a learning experience to always be prepared for all kinds of weather conditions. Looking forward to Pineapple Track Take II.
Remember to bring your togs and towel tomorrow for swimming!
Above is an acronym for some of the key attitudes and behaviours that we want to display this year. The first and last letters are absolutely key! Check out the 'Students Work' tab to find out what they stand for (or if you are a parent or caregiver reading this - ask your child what they mean).
Welcome Room 5 students, parents and caregivers to our blog for the year. This site is designed to be a small window into the Room 5 classroom as well as a place where important information and students' work can be shared and celebrated. It will include the following:
- Homework tasks
- Notices and important dates
- Photos of Room 5 in action
- Students' work
- Links to helpful websites
- AND MORE!
As the year goes more information and new tabs will appear. Please have a look around the site and become familiar with where to find the information you are after. The 'Key Dates' tab lists upcoming events that will take place in and out of the school grounds as well as electronic copies of most of the notices that get handed out during school. The 'Homework' tab is also another useful tab to check out as it will have a PDF copy of the homework tasks.
I look forward to seeing this site evolve and grow throughout the year.
Kind regards,
Mr Cooke
